what's best?

Musical Instruments for KS1 & KS2

Pentatonic Dragon Chimes - Click for more informationWhen considering use of these instruments in a school setting, you should be clear in your objective. Is it for play, is it for learning? what ages or mixes of ages? What abilities might exist already? what is the user mix?

We have many years experience in this field and will be happy to offer advice regarding the most appropriate tuning standard and layout to meet your needs.

This can include advising what you dont need. Often these instruments are sold with frames included. We save you that additional cost unless you ask us for a frame. Wall mounting instruments provides for the greatest installation flexibility however we can supply frames if required

With all scales we include the resolution note as standard This is usually a C note and 'brings you back to Do'. Our instruments span 3 octaves based around the range of a child's singing voice

Key Stage 1

If the instruments are for use in a Key Stage 1 environment and / or for unstructured play, as recommended by DfES, we highly recommend our best selling 'Dragon  range' of pentatonic products.

Dragon scales have no wrong notes, so every note harmonises with every other note and this provides the greatest play value.

We use a 5 tone C Major pentatonic scale CDEGA plus the resolution note C - The Dragon Scales link significantly with our online client resource of games and activities

Key Stage 2

Key Stage 2

For Key Stage 2 users and beyond, pentatonic Dragon scales can apply for general play however we introduce formal conventional scales that allow for better integration with music taught in the classroom and learned more widely.

For KS2 clients may consider

    • Diatonic (7 tone scale) - The white notes on a piano CDEFGAB + C
    • Chromatic (12 tone scale) - White and Black notes on a piano C C# D D# E F F# G G# A Bb B + C.

Our Pentatonic Focus

  • Pentatonic or 'Dragon' scales are 5-note octaves particularly suitable for Early Years introduction to music & creative play.
  • Playing within this framework reinforces musical intervals, key for this age group, that are easy to pitch accurately and work in canon.
  • Bingbangbong makes 4 octaves of C Major Dragon Scales as standard.
  • The span is 2 octaves either side of Middle C and includes the natural range of a child’s singing voice.
  • Chimes have a clear sound and a good sustain. Larger chimes provide an opportunity to feel and see the tube vibrating.

Our Chimes

  • All Items are individually hand tuned in a temperature-regulated environment.
  • Any combination of Dragon instruments will be harmonic – No wrong notes.
  • Our colour scheme and client primer resources promote pentatonic games and activities using the equipment
  • We supply an anti-tamper fixing kit; a special tool is required for fitting & removal.
  • We build our instruments for permanent outdoor installation using selected materials and processing.  Our Instruments have an indefinite lifespan.
  • We only make musical instruments and sensory items, we are specialists not playground manufacturers.
